Taking Animation in a New Direction

Brent George has spent the past two years teaching in the Dawson College 3D animation program.

An alumni of Sherdian College Classical Animation Program, Brent has worked for years in the games industry.

Brent was a successful director of animation at UbiSoft, directing blockbuster games such as Avatar.  He travelled the world with UbiSoft spearheading the promotion and media junkettes for the games he directed.

He made the decision last year to leave his high power postition with UbiSoft to teach full time at Dawson.

He teaches in both the DEC and AEC programs at the school, in courses that highlight all aspects of 3D art creation.

It was fun working with Brent.  He is a friend of my husband and I find him hilarious.

After going through my photos, I may have moved brent more into the shade, as he is squinting in some of the images.

I am happy with the final photo.

PRE PRODUCTION QUESTIONS

1.What is your intention in terms of how you plan to use the existing available light levels?

Going to shoot in the garden.  Thinking of using the trees for some shade.

2. What is the reason for your lens choice? (Do you want the compression of a long lens or the exaggerated perspective of a wide angle, fixed focal length or zoom)?

I plan on using my 20mm lens, since we are supposed to do full length.

3. What aperture do you plan to use and why?

I plan on using a large appeture. . . 5.6 or so.  I want the background distinguishable, but not perfectly sharp.

4. What shutter speed to you plan to use and why?

Flash .  125 maybe a bit higher

5. Do you have enough available light to achieve these camera settings?

Yes.

6. Do you have enough strobe to achieve these settings?

Yes.

7. Do you have too much light to achieve these settings?

I might.  But i plan on having the lights on a lower setting.  my model is pale.

8. Are there any technical problems that will need to be addressed at the shoot or in post-production?

Brent is pale.

9. How will you be addressing color balance?

Meter.  no gels.

10. What is the equipment you will need for the shoot? You are welcome to include any other special requirements or pertinent information?

whitelightening, softbox, extensions, vagabond, triggers, reflector

POST PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT //

This project was much harder than I thought.  Even with thinking about what I wanted to do before hand, my final set up was not even close.  I suppose we learn what works best with experience.

I am not a food photography person, and I really was unsure what to do to make the burger look good.

I got all the ambient light and spill colours I wanted in the background, although my original idea for the shot included more background.  When I started to take my test shots it was far to much background.  I went for something very very very simple.

I’m not sure its the best route, but certainly the main and most important thing in my shot is the burger – which in the end was the point.

All in all it was a good experience, but I certainly don’t see food photography as my calling.

There are blue and red lights from the bowling alley, I want to see them in the photo to produce mood

right now, i plan on using a 70-200, mainly because that is what Pierre used.

I do want to have the choice of playing with how much background you see.  I picked a spot that could look messy if there is too much background

I want a wide apperture, I want to see if I can get a bokeh effect with some of the lights if possible.

4. What shutter speed to you plan to use and why?

I am going to try a few speeds, but I’ll start at 1/125 as my fail safe and make adjustments from there.

no.

6. Do you have enough strobe to achieve these settings?

yes.

Not sure.  i’ll have to play around.

Trying to get the coloured background I want and still make the food look appetising. . .

POST PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT //

I really enjoyed this project, I had a real clear sense of what I wanted.  I didn’t, however, get that image I wanted. Haha!  Bruce, my model, is a good buddy and is a very good sport.  Because I work with Bruce we were able to talk about the shoot a bit before hand, so I felt I was prepared – plus I knew I’d have a good rapport with him.

I found out once I really had my lights set up that I really didn’t have the right background light to achieve my original goal (see inspiration photos below) – I used a tungsten light, I should have gotten out a pepper spot.  Because we had to trek out gear across the road and we had to get equipment that two groups could use. And being on location, it really was going to be too much of a hassle to go back to the school to change it.

I was thinking of the bigger picture, and my fellow work mates  and not 100% to my own project, honestly if I had sat down to think it through logically, I would have come to the conclusion that I needed a more intense light.  You learn, right?

Bruce really likes the image, and that makes me feel good about the shoot as a whole.

I felt like I had a good amount of time with my model, and I got some good feed back from Pierre.

Bruce had so much fun, he went on to be both Carlos and Sebastian’s model as well!  :D

With the lighting I want to replicate on of my inspiration photos.   I want to create a “halo” behind his head while he is sitting at a chair.  I want his to appear to have a position of authority, and stature.

My main lights will create a split look.  My model Bruce has angular features and I want to play up on that.  Create some dark creavases in his face, make him look a little sinister.

I kept the same set up as my initial test.  The distances etc.  I did however make a few adjustments.

My test I had the small strips and a  small softbox on a stand.  Although I wanted the large strips, I still got the small ones.  I did however get a Med softbox for my centre “butterfly” lighting and I put it on a boom rather than on the stand.  This helped a lot and got me the lighting I was looking for.  I still would have preferred the LARGE strip softboxes.  In addition to the larger softbox and boom, I also introduced a white reflector at the models waist to bring a little additional light into her face  I shot everything with a 70-200mm lens.

Prior to my shoot, we spent a lot of time going over the shoot concept, and Caroline made some superb suggestions based on the info I provide and the look of the model.  She artfully make the adjustments and changes needed for me to get the look I wanted.  The shoot would not have been as successful, easy and beautiful without Caroline’s work.

My model for the shoot, a fellow photographer, noted that Caroline was clean and hygienic in her application.  She was also very soft and gentle.

She was an incredible asset to the team, and we all look forward to working with her again.
